How To Look After Dry Skin

Dry skin is a common skin condition characterized by a lack of water in the skin. Dry skin can cause red patches, itchy & flaky skin but the good news is that some small steps can be taken to manage the condition.

The cause of dry skin

Hormones, weather, or lifestyle are just some of the factors that can cause dry skin. This guide will help you understand how to keep your skin in check throughout the year.

  • Avoid dry air but complimenting the heating or air-con with a humidifier
  • Not only ensure the air is well hydrated but also keep your body topped up too by drinking plenty of water
  • Enjoy foods rich in omega-3, such as salmon, flax seeds, walnuts and safflower oil. If you’re struggling to get your daily recommendation of Omega 3 in your diet, speak to your local Allcare Wellness Expert who can point you in the direction of a supplement.
  • Hydrocortisone cream is your friend, apply is to areas of redness (only to areas on the body) or an alternative would be to compress the area with something cool.

Hydrate your Skin

A key element to keeping your skin from suffering is to maintain a healthy moisturising routine to get rid of that dry and itchy sensation and have your skin feeling and looking healthy. To rehydrate you need a dry skin moisturiser, such as E45, which absorbs into your skin quickly to leave it soft and refreshed.

Although a nice long, hot, relaxing shower might seem like the perfect solution to a long day, it may turn out to be the reason for your dry skin. A long shower can flush your skin of the natural oils needed to keep you hydrated. A quick fix is to opt for quicker showers at a cooler temperature and moisturise post-wash to keep the goodness locked in.

Protecting products

The skincare shelves can be a minefield to navigate with so many variants, even for the trained eyed, here are a few things to look out, and what to avoid, when dealing with dry skin.

Remember the season –Your winter go to is a thicker and heavier moisturiser to fight the extra dry atmosphere. Whereas in the summer SPF and UV protected moisturisers give you that extra shield against from the sun.

  • Look for a cream with easy and quick absorption
  • Go alcohol-free. Alcohol can add to the dryness, so check the ingredients before you apply
  • Use a petroleum jelly-based product to seal a dry patch
  • Steer clear of the scented products. As nice as they smell, your dry skin might not think so
